Budget for gibbons can not be release

The Gibbon Rehabilitation Project is currently taking care of over 80 gibbons. Rehabilitation is a long and slow process.  After years of bad treatment many of the gibbons come to us with physical and/or mental problems. We have to ensure each is physically and mentally capable before we can release them. Sadly, many gibbons are not able to be released back into their natural forest habitat. They can be overly aggressive, some have had their canines removed, and some suffer from body deformations. These gibbons can not be released and have to be taken care of for the rest of their lives in captivity. The average lifespan for a gibbon is approximately 30 years. We are a non-profit organization and do not receive any support from the government to run this project. At the moment, all the funds to cover our expenses come from the kind donations of the visitors to our Center for Conservation, Education, and Fundraising. How many of these people, though, would be happy to contribute their money to care for these gibbons for 30 years.  It is a big responsible for us to take care those gibbons for the rest of their lives.

The costs of keeping a gibbon in captivity are outlined below

-Food: Food costs for 1 unreleased gibbon within 1 year 4,964 Baht;   30 years 148,920 Baht ($3,723 Us)

-Cages: One cage can only be used for 6 years; within 30 years captive gibbon requires 5 cages. One cage costs 45,010 Baht; within 30 years a captive gibbon requires 5 cages which totals 225,050 Baht ($5,626.25 Us)

-Land  cost: In Phuket, the cost of land is now approximately 700,000 Baht per 1 rai (1600 square meters). A cage for 1 gibbon uses 60 Square meters which costs 26,250 Baht ($656.25 Us).

-Medical treatment: One gibbon requires at least 5,000 baht a year for medical treatment; within 30 years a captive gibbon requires medical treatment costs for 150,000 Baht ($3,750 Us).

-Supervisor (Feeding, Cleaning, maintenance etc.) ; One supervisor receives 6,000 baht allowance for food and other expenses per month; within 30 years a captive gibbon requires 2,160,000 Baht ($54,000 Us)

-Other expenses i.e. Maintenance, utility units costs approximately 5,000 baht per month; within 30 years a captive gibbon requires 150,000 baht ($3,750 Us)

Estimated Total....2,860,220 Baht (71,505.5 USD$)

These gibbons are cute, but they sure are expensive!

GRP Gibbon Acceptance Criteria

As part of our work, the GRP does accept gibbons from owners who have them as legal pets but are no longer able to look after them. Sadly, due to the cost of maintaining gibbons in captivity, these gibbons must fit certain criteria. This criteria is to ensure that we accept only releasable gibbons and is outlined in our

Gibbon Acceptance Criteria:

1. It must be a White-handed gibbon (Hylobates lar)

2. It must be healthy, still have its canines, and not have any deformities.

3. It must not carry any diseases and passes the following blood sampling tests:         Hepatitis B - a check for Hepatitis B surface antigen, Hepatitis B surface antibody and Hepatitis B core antibody.

Hepatitis A - a check for  Hepatitis A  antibody

Herpes simplex  virus - a check for Herpes simplex antibody                                  Human immuno-deficiency virus - a check for HIV antibody

The blood tests cost about 5,000 baht per gibbon. These must be completed at the owners costs and accompany the gibbon, with the owner, on arrival to the GRP.  The owner must also show their personal identity card and as well as a copy of their census records. These are used for our records to indicate where the gibbon came from. The Gibbon Rehabilitation Project welcomes all gibbons which pass the criteria for the rehabilitation process. For gibbons who do not meet the requirements, the owner must take the responsibility of continuing to care for that gibbon.
